Have you ever reached for a banana only to have a cloud of pesky little fruit flies end up in your face? Me, too! I always wonder: how in the world did they even get into my kitchen, and why are there so many??!! With the last of the harvested fruits and veggies sitting on my counter, come the fruit flies! One could get a can of Raid, I suppose, and spray the Dickens out of those little suckers, but I prefer a non chemical way of dealing with them. This is just as effective and satisfying, not to mention, there are no chemicals sprayed onto the food I'm going to eat!
The first thing I like to do is to take as much off the counter for the fruit flies to eat as possible. I peel my bananas and freeze them in baggies, then use them in smoothies later. The rest of my fruits and veggies, I like to place in the refrigerator. If they can't go in the fridge, I keep them in a bowl on my counter and place my trap in the center of these produce, then let the flies go right into the trap....bwahahaha!! Once I get as much off my counters as I can, then I make my trap.
I gather the following things to make the trap: 1 plastic bowl or container, plastic wrap, 1 rubber band, 2 Tblsp of Apple Cider Vinegar, 1 drop of dish soap, and 1/4 cup of water. Mix the water, vinegar, and dish soap in the plastic container, place plastic wrap over the top, and secure into place with a rubber band. Use a knife to poke one small hole in the top of the plastic wrap, then place your trap in a spot where the most fruit flies like to hang out. You can add a small piece of fruit or vegetable to the trap as I did here.... They especially love the smell of apple cider vinegar, which gets them into the little hole. Once they get in, they can't get out! It's pretty amazing how well this trap works! Give a try and let me know how it works for you!
